Alison Self at MoonShadow Cafe

"Alison Self, playing some covers and some originals from her cleverly named album "Self-Titled," was simply a delight. I have a sneaking suspicion that she is the type of girl who uses a word like 'swell' in her vernacular. She was sweet and yet audacious, whimsical yet sassy, reminiscent of another time, perhaps a time more closely attune to the hay-days of Loretta Lynn and Emmy Lou Harris. Strumming her ukulele, singing soft and clear, Self was an endearing woman who impressed us with the cunning ability to cut the chill of the winter night with her remarkable warmth. The way she sung, and the songs she sings, leads her listeners to a deeper place that was more than a little bittersweet." Reltone Records artist Alison Self plays country, blues and folk music of different varieties on the guitar. She has been described as Richmond’s chanteuse “with a huge voice unlike any other female singer in Richmond.” Alison has been performing since ‘06 when she started learning to play music as a way to make money and pass the time while hoboing around the country. Now in 2014, she has become a well known musician in the Richmond VA roots circuit and frequently tours the US. Playing tunes from the likes of Hank Williams Sr., The Blue Sky Boys, Loretta Lynn and an assortment of cowboy and folk songs, Alison has a knack for showcasing obscure and well known vintage material alike. Original songs from Alison are sure to strike a chord, and thematically run the gamut from a working class upbringing, death, murder, freight trains, bad decisions, and of course, booze.
